Respond to the following prompt using information and facts you have gathered from reading or viewing news reports - also think about our study of WWI - The Treaty of Versailles - The League of Nations and the effectiveness of the League of Nations
Prompt - Based on your historical knowledge and knowledge of current global issues - How effective are international organizations at controlling the actions of "rogue governments" around the world?
In recent modern history international organizations haven't been very successful when dealing with "rogue governments". The League of Nations was the first attempt which was unsuccessful because it was like a dog with no bark. With the beginning of the 21st century the United Nations (UN) has started to take its role in the world seriously. Other international organizations such as the African Union has made honest attempts at controlling rogue governments. Since 1991 African Union (AU) troops have been fighting to regain control of Somalia from the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab. The problem becomes that many of these "rogue nations" Syria for example have powerful allies in those international organization such as the UN Security Council. Those powerful friends can then protect their smaller allies that are subject to international scrutiny.
