    1. Extreme weather changes and changes in farming practices.
    2. Mexico's National Commission of Natural Protected Areas conducted a study that revealed land that once had 50 acres of butterflies went down to 2.94 acres.
    3. Food security for us has increased a need of food for us which has also affected the butterflies that are around us.
    4. A negative is that we will lose one of the most amazing migrations ever and a positive is that we will have more food as a result.
    5. They halted extensive logging in the monarchs’ winter home to help prevent any other killings of the monarchs.
    6. The government is attempting to stop the deaths of monarchs which connect to our food security problem as well.

  2. 1. The extreme weather
    2. There was a 59% decline from the 7.14 acres of butterflies measured in December 2011.
    3. The American Midwest’s corn belt is a critical feeding ground for monarchs, which once found a ready source of milkweed growing between the rows of millions of acres of soybean and corn.
    4. The monarchs’ migration is seen as a natural marvel and, for Mexico, a huge tourist attraction. But naturalists regard the butterflies as a forward indicator of the health of the food chain. Fewer butterflies probably means there are fewer other insects that are food for birds, and fewer birds for larger predators.
5.local governments will replenish some of the milkweed lost to development and changed farming habits.
    6. Farming and extreme weather.

  3. 1. What are the main reasons for the decline of the amount of Butterflies migrating?
Extreme weather and changed farming practices in North America, the Mexican government and a conservation alliance.
    2. What statistic shows the drastic decline of the butterfly population?
The area of forest occupied by the butterflies were once at 50 acres but are down to 2.94 acres.
    3. How has science and the need for the increase of food security led to a sharp decline in the food source of the butterflies?
Because the farmland is being genetically modified to tolerate herbicides.
    4. Explain the negative cause and effect cycle created by the loss of the butterflies - what is the evidence to support this cycle?
There has been breaking drought and heat in North America which is causing the butterflies to arrive early and go father north. The early arrival disrupted their breeding cycle.
    5. How have the governments tried to slow the loss of habitat of the butterflies?
The Mexican government halted extensive logging.
    6. What are the BIGGER issues (TWO) at work in this article? Think about this - use your knowledge from previous articles to answer this prompt.
The bigger issue is illegal logging in Mexico and the rising problem of Global Warming. Global Warming is causing extreme heat in the winter season.

  4. 1.) The extreme weather changes and changing in farming.
2.) The butterflies were at 50 acres, but that drastically dropped to 2.94 acres.
3.) They are genetically modifying the farming land so that herbicides can be accepted.
4.) There was a drought in North America which makes the butterfies go North earlier. This corrupts their cycle of breeding.
    5.) They stopped extensive logging
6.) The weather conditions and mexican government are the bigger issue.

    3. Because the more we take food for our food security the more butterflies food source will decline.
    4. We will have more food to our self is a positive and a negative is a breakage in our food chain with fewer butterflies
    5. They slowed down of extensive logging in monarchs homes

    3. How has science and the need for the increase of food security led to a sharp decline in the food source of the butterflies?
As our needs increase, the amount of food for the butterflies decreases.
    4. Explain the negative cause and effect cycle created by the loss of the butterflies - what is the evidence to support this cycle?
Positive- we have more food for ourselves.
Negative- interrupts the food chain as well as their cycle of breeding.

Putting a stop to extensive logging.

    3. How has science and the need for the increase of food security led to a sharp decline in the food source of the butterflies?
The use of herbicide-tolerant crops have affected the decrease in milkweed which is a main source of food for butterflies
    4. Explain the negative cause and effect cycle created by the loss of the butterflies - what is the evidence to support this cycle?
The cause would be there is no where for the butterflies to migrate with few grasslands around the country today and the effect would be the lack of food for animals in the food chain and less tourist for the country of Mexico and the positive would be that as humans there will be a greater amount of food available
    5. How have the governments tried to slow the loss of habitat of the butterflies?
Replenish some of the milkweed lost to development and change the farming habits and also not logging in the monarchs' winter home

    2) There was a 59 percent decrease from the 7.14 acres of butterflies measured in December 2011.
    3) The weather has caused the butterflies to migrate earlier and fly further than usual. It causes their breeding cycle to become disoriented and their eggs to dry up. The butterflies food source has also been scarce due to herbicide tolerant crops.
    4) The decline in butterflies could seriously affect the food chain. A positive is that people have more food.
    5) Governments are trying to replenish the milkweed for the butterflies.

  11. 1. What are the main reasons for the decline of the amount of Butterflies migrating? it's declined because of the farming practices, also because of the weather
    2. What statistic shows the drastic decline of the butterfly population? the percentage of butterflies is 59 percent decrease.& it went down 2.94 acres.
    3. How has science and the need for the increase of food security led to a sharp decline in the food source of the butterflies? because the butterflys source of food has decreased, mostly because of the tolerant crops as well as the herbicide
    4. Explain the negative cause and effect cycle created by the loss of the butterflies - what is the evidence to support this cycle? well its good that we will have more food but its not good because there wont be as many butterflies.
    5. How have the governments tried to slow the loss of habitat of the butterflies? by resupplying more milkweed

    Changing weather, farming

    Decreased 59% and 2.94 acres

The food sources have decreased because of crops' pesticides

If this continues, we'll have sufficient crops, but insufficient butterflies

    They're increasing/resupplying milkweed

  19. 1. What are the main reasons for the decline of the amount of Butterflies migrating?
    - The weather conditions have been very drastic and inconsistent. But on top of that many of the farming techniques that have been innovated have many pesticides that are harmful to them.
    2. What statistic shows the drastic decline of the butterfly population?
    - There were 94 acres of butterflies recorded in the annual in December, however a 59% decline of the the 7.14 acres of butterflies measured in the past census of December 2011.
    3. How has science and the need for the increase of food security led to a sharp decline in the food source of the butterflies?
-The innovation of herbiicide-tolerant crops has dramatically affect the production of milkweed. Which is the primary food source of butterflies.
    4. Explain the negative cause and effect cycle created by the loss of the butterflies - what is the evidence to support this cycle?
-The positive affects from this are that there will be more food available for humans, because we will not have to stop or alter our food production to help preserve the butterflies. However thats the negative, butterflies will begin to leave the areas they inhabit , the natural cycle of life will be disrupted and we will slowly lose one of those couterparts to nature in our country
    5. How have the governments tried to slow the loss of habitat of the butterflies?
    - The government has began trying to plant more milkweed in different areas, also they have been continuing to create better farming techniques.
    6. What are the BIGGER issues (TWO) at work in this article? Think about this - use your knowledge from previous articles to answer this prompt.
    - Food security is a big factor in this, and the effect that agricultural development and production has on our environment.

    - There is a statistic of a 59% decrease of the butterfly population.
    3. How has science and the need for the increase of food security led to a sharp decline in the food source of the butterflies?
    - The biggest threat is the farmland expansion.
    4. Explain the negative cause and effect cycle created by the loss of the butterflies - what is the evidence to support this cycle?
    - The positive side is we wouldn't have to share our food with butterflies and have more for ourselves. Negative is that the butterfly population can keep decreasing and be at risk of extinction.
    5. How have the governments tried to slow the loss of habitat of the butterflies?
