    2. What is historically significant about Gaza? You will have to research this as well
-It is a small strip of land that palestinians were moved into. Because before WW2 Israel was not a country there was only Palestine. After the war the land was split up into a land for the Jews and a land for the Christian and Muslim Arabs
    3. Why were women banned from running in this marathon?
-They cancelled the race becuase they believed that they should strictly follow more of the religion and traditions of Palestinian people.
    4. Do you agree with the decision - canceling the race? Why or why not - please explain your answer
-No I don't agree because like the one female contestant said , the tradition was for Palestinians to learn and practice sports.
    5. What is the "bigger" issue raised in this article?
    - The main point was for the government to begin making more changes for women's rights and rather than restricting them, they want more freedom.

    1. Gaza is in the top right corner of Egypt, its not very big. Right between Egypt and Jordan.
    2. Gaza has an endless amount of violence, something is always going on to where Gaza is fighting
    3. Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesman for the United Nations agency, said the marathon was canceled after Hamas informed the agency that women would not be allowed to take part under any circumstances. Of the more than 2,400 people registered for the race, some 370 were women.
    4. No because I don't really understand why women couldn't run. It might be a religious reason but even if it is I still don't see the need to band women or even cancel the race.
    5. The discrimination towards women.

  5. 1. you will have to research a map for this - Where is Gaza? - be as specific as possible
Gaza is also known as Gaza city. It is a Palestinian city in the Gaza strip. The Gaza strip is on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea that borders Egypt on the southwest and Israel on the north and east.
    2. What is historically significant about Gaza? - You will have to research this as well
Gaza was the first city in Palestine to be conquered by the Arabs. It was best known in ancient times as an ideal place for trading for Asian, European and North African markets. In an 1949 armistice agreement Egypt gained control of Gaza. Gaza also became a refuge for Jews expelled from newly independent Israel.
    3. Why were women banned from running in this marathon?
They were banned because the Hamas wanted to enforce tougher Islamic strictures.
    4. Do you agree with the decision - canceling the race? Why or why not - please explain your answer
Yes, because all people should be able to participate in the race. Nobody should be discriminated against and left out of the race. The article says that Islam encourages Muslims to learn sports, therefore, women should be allowed to be in the race.
    5. What is the "bigger" issue raised in this article?
The bigger issue is how the Hamas government is trying to put so many restrictions against women.

(Their were missles fired by the people of palestine that landed in the Gaza strip and split it up. ) Now religion has gotten involved and everybody is trying to take over that land.
The people of Isreal used to live in Gaza
    3. Why were women banned from running in this marathon?
because of their religious beliefs and the way they dresssed. The way they dresssed define their religion so they were not allowd too run in that marathon.
    4. Do you agree with the decision - canceling the race? Why or why not - please explain your answer
No, Women should be able to run it if they think they can. You should not restrict women from doing something that they may or may not be ale to do. it is just not fair.
    5. What is the "bigger" issue raised in this article?
Not giving women freedom and the whole issue with Gaza

  7. 1. Gaza city was located at Palestine
    2. Gaza city is one of the Palestinian's oldest city. It's strategically situated between 2 continents, Asia and Africa.
    3. Because, Hamas informed the agency about the women's denial under any circumstances; there's no discontent for these females to participate among the 1.6K schoolchildren set to run.
    4. No, because if the government has an issue of the all gender marathon, they need to think before their citizens have a riot to their land.
    5. The Palestinian refugee camp suffered from a $66 million shortfall in its budget.

  8. 1) Gaza is on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and borders Egypt and Israel.
    2) Gaza is where the Israelis pushed the Palestinians into.
    3) They were banned because of their gender.
    4) I don't agree with this because if a woman wants to run a marathon they should be able to.
    5) The article raises the issue of respecting other people's religions

  9. 1) on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea, next to Egypt and Israel.
2)Gaza served as a refuge for the Palestinians, when Israel became an official country.
3)Women were banned because it was a "violation of religion", and to "protect modesty" by not mixing the men with the women.
4)I don't agree with this, because it's unfair for women that men can participate in an event and they cannot. The excuses are pretty weak too. I'm pretty sure there are ways for women to respect tradition, and be modest while taking part in an activity.
5)I think money was the bigger issue. there was a $66 million shortfall in the budget.

  10. 1.Gaza is located in the Middle East and is bordered by Egypt and Israel
2.The place where Israeli's sent Palestinians
3.Women were banned due to Hamas putting stricter restrictions on the lenient society that they have and they are trying to include more cultural beliefs/ways into the population's lifestyle.
4.I disagree because in the article it says, "Islam encouraged Muslims to learn sports, and it did not stipulate that it's only men who should practice sport," I think this quote means they weren't specific in the first set of rules trying to encourage people to join sports and now telling them that they cant do it because of there race.
5.I think the main part of the article is women's rights and how not only is it seen in military but in some places they happen in the everyday life of people in that country. Also economics (agency in charge of refugees has a $66 million shortfall in budget) and religious beliefs (dress code for women and what things they can and can't wear) were seen in the article.

2.) It was where the Palestinians were sent by the Israeli people
3.) When stricter laws were put on society, they decided it was to protect modesty by not mixing women with men.
4.) I do not agree with this because it's unfair for men to be able to compete in sports or anything else, but women cannot.
5.) I think the main purpose was to express the need for fairness in the society and also the economy.

  12. 1) It is located in the Middle East on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
    2) The Israeli people sent Palestinians there.
    3) They wouldn't let the women run the marathon because Gaza wanted to keep the tradition and religion precise.
    4) I can understand why they would cancel the race, but it shouldn't have been because women couldn't run. If they cancelled the race, I believe it should be to reduce violence that could rise up behind it.
    5) The government is coming in to tighten up the laws and dress referring to women- limiting more of their rights.

    3. They wouldn't let the women race because the government said it was against religious beliefs but the women that didn't get to race said it was against the religion by not letting them race.
    4. I do not agree with the article what so ever! Women should have the same rights that us men do. We were made equally and i think it should stay that way. Women should not be kept from doing what they want just cause they are women.
    5. I think the main purpose was that women still don't have as many rights as men. Women fought for years to get jobs men had and to vote and just recently the special forces just let women join. After all that hard work, they are still being discriminated against.

    3) Women were not allowed to run the race because Hamas said that it was against the religious beliefs.
    4) I do not agree with the decision on cancelling the race. I see that they want to follow their religion but with the advancing in society you cannot discriminate no matter what. Women deserve the same rights that men have.
    5) The bigger picture in this article to me is how poorly women are treated not only in this country, but around the world. Women are not treated like they should be and this is just another example of women being discriminated against.

4.) I do not agree with this because it's not fair that discrimination is the key in the argument. There should be global peace and love, not fighting.
5.) I think that it was just another piece of the puzzle. The world is going downhill when it comes to women, and we as americans are greatly privileged. It's just a reminder for me to thank the government everyday for my rights and the fact that I'm allowed to be a true "person" where I live.

  16. Off of Egypt, near the Mediterranean and Red Seas.

There are always disputes with Iranians; Palestinians being sent in.

Women, by religion, aren't allowed to do many of the things men are.

I think women should have the chance to run, and if the men get so upset about it, just beat them in the race.

The purpose is to expose the discrimination and flat out disrespect for women that there is out there.
